Washington Commanders Roster Adjustments for 2023 Season

The Washington Commanders made significant roster adjustments on Tuesday, reducing their lineup to the required 53 players. This decision marks critical changes for the team as they gear up for the upcoming season.

Significant Trades and Cuts

In a noteworthy move, Washington traded wide receiver Jahan Dotson to the Philadelphia Eagles. Dotson's departure is one of many changes, as the team also released several recent draft picks, including Ricky Stromberg, Braeden Daniels, K.J. Henry, Chris Rodriguez, and Andre Jones Jr.

From the group of seven players drafted just 16 months ago, only Emmanuel Forbes Jr. and Quan Martin have managed to secure their spots on the team. The trend continues as only 12 out of the 33 players drafted by Washington from 2020 to 2023 during Ron Rivera's tenure still remain on the roster.

Consequences of Cut Decisions

The Commanders' roster cuts have had a widespread impact. Notable releases include quarterbacks Sam Hartman and Trace McSorley and running backs Chris Rodriguez Jr., Michael Wiley, and Austin Jones. The wide receiver position saw a shake-up with Martavis Bryant, Kazmeir Allen, Davion Davis, Mitchell Tinsley, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, and Brycen Tremayne all being cut. Tight end Cole Turner also faced the chopping block.

On the offensive line, Ricky Stromberg, Cameron Tom, and Julian Good-Jones were released. Defensive casualties included K.J. Henry, Andre Jones Jr., Jalen Harris, and Justin Hollins. There were also changes in the linebacker and cornerback positions, with Chapelle Russell and Anthony Pittman, and cornerbacks Chigozie Anusiem and Nick Whiteside being let go.

Remaining Core Players

Despite the significant cuts, the Commanders have retained a solid group of core players. Defensive tackles Allen and Payne continue to be starters. Emmanuel Forbes Jr. and Quan Martin are the only players from the last two draft classes to secure their positions. Martin will team up with Jeremy Chinn to form the safety duo, ensuring a robust defensive backfield.

Offensive and Defensive Structure

Washington's offense will feature three quarterbacks, three running backs, six wide receivers, four tight ends, and nine offensive linemen. The defense includes nine defensive linemen, five cornerbacks, six safeties, and three specialists. The running back trio of Bryan Robinson, Austin Ekeler, and Jeremy McNichols is set to lead the ground game. However, tight end Lucas missed significant time due to unspecified tightness, which could impact the tight end depth chart.

Strategies Moving Forward

With the second waiver wire claim spot, trailing only the Carolina Panthers, the Commanders are in a favorable position to enhance their roster. As head coach Dan Quinn noted, "We're always going to make what we think is the best decision for the team. That's our obligation. There's no 'ours' or 'theirs,' or any of that kind of good stuff. Like once I was here, I connected with lots of players here. So yeah, no looking at it as anything other than just do what we need to do best for the team and really that's where it starts and ends."

Quinn emphasized the ongoing nature of roster adjustments, stating, "As the wire comes back out today, obviously the scouting department is the key part of that, of assessing a player that may be on another team that gets released and a current player on our team." He added that it's a common practice across the league during this time of the year. "It's pretty normal around the league this year at this time that a lot of these conversations and things happen. And quite often, you look at some players that never end up making it on the waiver wire."

The head coach also praised the intense and physical style of play that is becoming a trademark of the Commanders' roster. "You feel their intensity, you feel their speed when they play. The speed, the physicality, the effort, the straining, those are things that are Commander-style plays and I thought those two really represented that," Quinn reflected, underscoring the qualities that the coaching staff values in their players.

As the Commanders continue to refine their roster, they aim to strike a balance between maintaining a core of dependable veterans and integrating promising new talent. The waiver wire and remaining preseason weeks will be crucial as Washington shapes its team identity and strives for a competitive edge in the league.
