Philadelphia Eagles Bolster Offensive Line with Signing of Mekhi Becton
The Philadelphia Eagles have made a strategic move to strengthen their offensive line through the signing of Mekhi Becton. Originally brought in as a swing tackle to support starters Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, Becton's versatility and readiness have quickly proven to be valuable assets for the team.
Adjusting to a New Role
Becton's role took an unexpected turn when Tyler Steen suffered an ankle injury, leaving a gap at the starting right guard position. Despite not practicing during the first few days of training camp, Becton aptly demonstrated his adaptability. His initial practice with the first team saw him lined up as the right guard, where he notably neutralized defensive standout Jalen Carter in 11-on-11 drills. This performance has not gone unnoticed by the coaching staff and his teammates.
Head coach Nick Sirianni expressed confidence in Becton’s abilities, stating, "I'm looking forward to that. Mekhi has had a good camp so far and looking forward to getting him some work next to Lane [Johnson] and continuing to work forward with that."
Learning and Contribution
Though sidelined in the early days of training camp, Becton remained engaged and used the downtime to absorb knowledge from his teammates. His commitment to staying involved illustrates his professional attitude and dedication. Becton remarked on the experience, saying, "The first few days he wasn't practicing, but he was definitely in my ear the whole time and telling me what I was doing wrong. He's been a great help."
Landon Dickerson, the Eagles' left guard, also praised Becton's flexibility and contribution to the team, stating, "I think Mekhi is doing great. He's had to bounce around a few positions. We had some guys get banged up. Nothing different than what happens during the season, right?" Dickerson further highlighted Becton's value, adding, "We have a guy that can swing at both guard and tackle, can play both guard spots. That's a lot of value in the NFL. He's able to play four out of five positions."
Looking Ahead
The Eagles have yet to disclose the anticipated duration of Tyler Steen’s absence, but Becton’s readiness to step in when needed has given the team a reliable alternative. His eagerness to contribute, whether as a starter or a backup, was evident when he said, "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready. If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready."
Becton remains an integral component of the Eagles' second-team offensive line, adding depth and flexibility to the roster. His ability to navigate multiple positions will undoubtedly help the team navigate the challenges of the upcoming season.
As the Philadelphia Eagles continue to prepare for the challenges ahead, the addition of Mekhi Becton provides them with not just a capable player, but a resilient and adaptable asset that can reinforce their offensive front when called upon.
