As the Arizona Cardinals gear up for their new season, all eyes are on the recovery and preparation of their star quarterback, Kyler Murray. An air of optimism envelops the team as Murray makes his return after being sidelined with an ACL injury late in the 2022 campaign. This injury had cast a shadow over the Cardinals' season, but now, with Murray back to full health, the prospects look bright.
A Rigorous Offseason
Throughout the offseason, Murray dedicated himself to an intense rehabilitation program, working closely with the team's trainers to ensure he regained his form. Head coach Jonathan Gannon, who took over the reins last year, is particularly impressed with Murray's progress. "Physically and mentally, I mean, he looks damn good. He looks damn good," Gannon remarked, underscoring the quarterback's readiness.
This offseason has been markedly different for Murray compared to the previous year. Unlike last year, when he missed significant portions of the preseason programs, this time he has been an active participant throughout. Gannon reflected on Murray's situation last year, saying, "You know, 'cause you gotta think, he played really good football for us; he had never taken a snap in this offense until Atlanta [in Week 10], you know what I mean, his first game back. I mean, he had a couple weeks of practice leading up to that, but no offseason program, no training camp. No however many games we played without him. Couple weeks of practice and then, you're going, 'Let's play football.'"
On-Field Performance
Murray's return to the lineup last season was met with mixed results. He completed 65.7% of his passes, averaging 6.7 yards per attempt. His stat line included 10 touchdowns against five interceptions, alongside 244 rushing yards and three additional scores on the ground. While these numbers point to a solid performance, there was a palpable sense that Murray had yet to reach his peak form.
However, Gannon believes that Murray is now in a much better place, both mentally and physically, compared to last year. "So, I think from a mental and physical standpoint, right now where he's at, to even when he got back last year or even where he finished last year, I think he's leaps and bounds ahead," Gannon commented. Such a strong endorsement from the head coach bodes well for Murray's potential impact this coming season.
New Additions to the Offense
In addition to Murray's recovery, the Cardinals have bolstered their offensive lineup with the addition of rookie wideout Marvin Harrison Jr. This new weapon is expected to provide Murray with more options and contribute to a more dynamic offensive strategy. The synergy between Murray and Harrison Jr. will be vital in elevating the team's performance.
Gannon also spoke highly of Murray's work ethic and leadership qualities. "What I know about the guy, my relationship with him when I got this job: His will to win is extremely high," he said. This determination has been evident in Murray's offseason efforts, as he has consistently shown a willingness to go above and beyond to improve himself and the team. "And if you detail out and lay out for him what is needed from him to improve himself, the offense and the team, he is one thousand percent willing to do that," Gannon added, highlighting Murray's commitment to the Cardinals' success.
Leadership On and Off the Field
Beyond his physical skills and tactical acumen, Murray has embraced his role as a team leader. "So, I love the guy, because he's done everything that I've asked of him and more. He's been a phenomenal leader on and off the field -- not just with the offense, but with the entire team," Gannon praised. This holistic approach to leadership has helped foster a more cohesive and motivated team environment.
As the new season draws nearer, the Arizona Cardinals are poised for a promising run with Kyler Murray leading the charge. His physical readiness, combined with new offensive additions and a strengthened team spirit, sets the stage for what could be an exciting and successful season. Under Gannon’s guidance and with Murray at the helm, the Cardinals are preparing to make their mark.
