Tyus Jones Joins Phoenix Suns on a One-Year Deal
Tyus Jones, a seasoned 28-year-old point guard, has agreed to a one-year, $3.3 million deal with the Phoenix Suns. The veteran's minimum salary offer from the Suns comes after an impressive campaign with the Washington Wizards, where Jones showcased his talent by averaging 12.0 points and 7.3 assists during the 2023-24 season.
Jones, a native of Apple Valley, Minnesota, began his NBA career with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2015. Over his first four seasons with the Timberwolves, he developed a reputation for his court vision and playmaking abilities. In 2019, Jones joined the Memphis Grizzlies, where he further honed his skills and averaged 9.2 points, 4.5 assists, and 1.2 steals per game during the 2022 playoffs. Following his stint in Memphis, Jones spent a season with the Washington Wizards before making the move to Phoenix.
The addition of Jones bolsters a Phoenix Suns roster that already features All-Star talents such as Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal. With the new signing, the Suns are looking to deepen their guard rotation and add more playmaking options.
Jones expressed his enthusiasm about the move to Phoenix, highlighting the recruitment efforts of Suns' governor Mat Ishbia and the front office, and the influence of coach Mike Budenholzer. "The chance to play for the Phoenix Suns made the most sense on a lot of levels to me and my family—beginning with the way [governor] Mat Ishbia and the front office recruited me to how coach [Mike Budenholzer] showed me how I can significantly impact a team that has a real opportunity to challenge for an NBA title as their starting point guard," Jones said.
Jones also noted the strategic and financial considerations that played into his decision, indicating that the Suns' offer aligns well with his long-term career goals. "My agent [Bradbury] walked me and my family through multiple free agent offers and sign-and-trade proposals at a number of different financial levels, but the Suns' opportunity is where I can best maximize my value for a return to free agency next year as well as give myself a chance to be part of what I think will be a special team and season."
For the Phoenix Suns, the acquisition of Jones adds a reliable and experienced point guard who can provide leadership and stability on the court. Given his proven track record and reputation as a team player, Jones is expected to integrate seamlessly into the Suns' system and contribute to their quest for an NBA title.
